Music don’t owe anybody a living. Just because you play music, it ain’t supposed to make you rich or famous. It’s supposed to be your life, and it’s supposed to help you, and help those you love… if you get a shot, if you get on national television, or if you get a record out that somebody can remember, great. That ought to encourage you not to quit, but it don’t mean a whole lot.

Music makes me forget my real situation. It transports me into a state which is not my own. Under the influence of music I really seem to feel what I do not feel, to understand what I do not understand, to have powers which I cannot have. Music seems to me to act like yawning or laughter; I have no desire to sleep, but I yawn when I see others yawn; with no reason to laugh, I laugh when I hear others laugh. And music transports me immediately into the condition of soul in which he who wrote the music found himself at that time.

On the only station worth listening to, WFUV, a version of this song caught Katie’s ear but I had to over rule it with the White Stripes version because it’s just so badass. So here is our pick of the week originally by the lovely Dolly Parton…

This week we’re sharing an incredible performance by Fleet Foxes. When we saw them live a few years ago at Newport Folk Festival we were blown away by their perfect harmonies. This video features our favorite, Blue Ridge Mountains (starts around the 2:30 mark). Enjoy!
